The Cynefin Framework, created by Dave Snowden, is a sense-making model that helps you understand the nature of a situation and choose the right approach. It recognizes that different situations require fundamentally different responses.
How to use it
The framework describes five domains:
- Clear (Simple) — Cause and effect are obvious. Best practice exists.
- Approach: Sense → Categorize → Respond
- Apply best practices
- Complicated — Cause and effect exist but aren't immediately obvious. Expert analysis needed.
- Approach: Sense → Analyze → Respond
- Apply good practices with expert help
- Complex — Cause and effect can only be understood in retrospect. The situation is unpredictable.
- Approach: Probe → Sense → Respond
- Run experiments, learn from results
- Chaotic — No clear cause and effect. Urgent action needed.
- Approach: Act → Sense → Respond
- Take immediate action to stabilize, then assess
- Confusion — You don't know which domain you're in.
- Break the situation down into smaller parts and categorize each one.
Example
- Clear: Adding a new static page to a website → Follow the standard process
- Complicated: Optimizing database performance → Bring in a DBA expert to analyze
- Complex: Entering a new market → Run small experiments, measure, learn
- Chaotic: Production server is down → Fix it now, analyze later
Takeaway
The Cynefin Framework teaches you that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to decision-making. By correctly identifying the domain you're operating in, you can choose the most effective response strategy.
