The Iceberg Model is a systems thinking tool that helps you look beyond the surface-level events to understand what's really going on. Just like a real iceberg, most of what drives events is hidden below the surface.
How to use it
The Iceberg Model has four levels, from visible to hidden:
- Events (above the water) — What just happened? These are the observable occurrences. Most people stop here.
- Patterns/Trends — What trends have there been over time? Look at the data and spot recurring patterns.
- Underlying Structures — What has influenced the patterns? What are the rules, policies, or physical structures causing the patterns?
- Mental Models — What assumptions, beliefs, and values do people hold that created the structures? This is the deepest level.
Start at the top (events) and work your way down to uncover the root causes.
Example
- Pattern: This team member has missed 3 out of the last 5 deadlines.
- Structure: There's no formal project planning process and the team member juggles multiple projects simultaneously.
- Mental Model: The organization values saying "yes" to every request over sustainable workload management.
Takeaway
The Iceberg Model helps you get to the root cause of problems instead of just reacting to surface-level events. By understanding deeper levels, you can create more effective and lasting solutions.
